County Chapter of Gold Star Wives.

For the past few weeks, we've honored powerful women on Mondays. This week, I’d like to focus on a woman I’ve had the honor of meeting personally, Patricia Barbee, a Gold Star Wife. For those who might not know, Gold Star Wives are women whose husbands have died in service to our country.
In 1965 Patricia met her husband, U.S. Marine, John W. Barbee. In June, 1966 they married. On August 8, 1968, Patricia learned that John who was on orders in Okinawa, was now in Vietnam. On August 10, 1968 at 5:00 PM, the doorbell rang. There were three Marines standing at her door- a moment all military families fear.
Patricia Barbee is a woman who has spent decades helping in her community and beyond. She founded the Burlington County Chapter of the Gold Star Wives, then went on to become Middle Atlantic Regional President, and from there rose to be the National Chaplain. She worked tirelessly with the other members of the GSW to get legislation passed: DIC (Dependency and Indemnity Compensation) for Gold Star Children. By 1989, she was in her words a “full time volunteer” for her community. She founded an education center for Senior Citizens, set up health clinics for the American Cancer Society, chaired the first Relay for Life in North Bryan County, and became a fraud buster for the government. Rightfully, she was named Georgia’s volunteer of the year in 2001.
For 49 years Mrs. Barbee has been working for her fellow Gold Star Wives. And for 49 years Mrs. Barbee has been working for the benefit of all veterans and their families. Patricia's experience includes working in city government, law enforcement, and commercial construction as a Job Superintendent, building senior citizens residences. She is a personal inspiration, and I encourage anyone wanting to know more about this extraordinary woman to visit her website:
